It seems like everyone we meet this week wears (or should be wearing) a 30C bra size. One of those women is our good friend Hanna Pumfry, of sustainable living platform Flor and Cesta. For Hanna’s entry into the Lara Intimates Boob Diaries, she takes her measurements, finds her size and chats about the importance of ethical fashion and the perfect fit.
At the beginning of her video, Hanna says “the guys over at (Lara Intimates) are not only really eco-friendly, they also pay attention to getting your bra size right.” A few months ago, Hanna took a tour of our studio in London. She saw all our reclaimed fabrics, met the lingerie design and production team, learned about our eco-friendly practices when making bras and saw our collection of sustainably sourced and ethically made bras. Just like Hanna says, our mission is to create bras and lingerie with amazing fit and environmentally and socially conscious practices.
Before taking her bra measurements, Hanna explains her past experiences wearing bras. She says “If you’re anything like me, it’s been a lifetime of painful underwiring and wanting to rip your bra off.” Hanna feels the way a lot of women do about bras: their uncomfortable and sizing is confusing. Wired bras can only be comfortable if you’re wearing correct size. If you wear the incorrect size of an underwired bra, the wire will sit in the incorrect place and almost certainly dig in or awkwardly jump away from your chest.
This discomfort isn’t Hanna’s fault. It’s not any woman’s fault. In store measuring is awkward and every brand has a different sizing system. Often these sizing systems are not explained well, so women are left confused about why one shop sizes differently than another. Ultimately, this makes shopping for bras confusing and frustrating. And in Hanna’s case, nearly impossible. Hanna has a 30 underbust, which makes her a 30 band size. This small band size is rare to find on the high street, so even if she understands her size, there are almost no shops providing the right bra for her. This is very common for women with a small frame because small band sizes are rarely made by high street lingerie manufacturers.
To find her bra size, Hanna begins by measuring her underbust. She measures 30 inches. She enters that measurement into our online bra size calculator, aka the Find My Bra Size tool. Next, she measures her bust and gets 33 inches. She enters that measurement in Find My Bra Size and finds that she is a 30C.
Now that we have Hanna’s size, our lingerie production team in London is making a bra just for her. Just like all our bras, Hanna’s will be made from luxury lingerie fabrics, sustainably sourced surplus from around the world. The bra will be made in London in our ethical lingerie factory, run entirely by women with three seamstresses and entirely fair trade production. Stay tuned for Hanna’s second Boob Diaries entry, where she will receives and tries on her 30C bra from Lara Intimates.
